The 10 Weirdest Beauty tips From The 1950’s
Posted on
I'm sure 20 years from now someone will be laughing about how we think that juice cleanses are beneficial, or that we still thought that cellulite was caused by not drinking enough water. That being said, its hard to imagine anyone ever thinking that ANY of these could work, especially number one.
1. Trim Your Lashes
Mccall’s magazine recommended trimming lashes every six months in order to promote growth….Uh, no.
2. Meat Face Mask:
A trip to the butcher is all you need for beautiful skin! This one actually may help skin, especially if the meat is cold. It would probably de-puff the face but…yuck. We’re going to stick with regular moisturisers.
3. Vaseline and Coal Dust As Mascara:
Before the advent of THE staple makeup product, women used a mixture of coal dust and Vaseline in order to make lashes appear darker. In fact, mascara in the tube wasn’t available for purchase until as late as 1917.
4. The Thicker The Cream, The Better It works
In reality, extremely thick creams can often serve to block pore and worsen the skins texture and moisture balance. If your skin is oily, stay far away from any sort of thick moisture cream. Luckily today there are so many products that cater to each specific skin type.
5. 100 Brush Strokes Per Day Makes Hair Luminous:
Overbrushing can actually lead to frayed and split ends. It may also result in an overproduction of oil from the scalp. As a general rule, brush when you need, and brush on DRY hair. The hair follicle is 40% weaker when wet, and is much more susceptible to breakage.
6. Spank Yourself To Reduce Cellulite:
In theory…this would prove a short term fix. Swollen red
skin would diminish the appearance of dimples, but only until your skin
returned to normal. Also, ouch? To reduce problem areas on hips and thighs, try
amping up your workout routine and a targeted cellulite treatment, less
painful, more effective.
7. Smile Until It Hurts For Breast Growth:
Taken from Looking Good Is the Best Revenge (1984) “To firm up the muscles that support the breasts (not the breasts themselves), smile as widely as you can (until it turns into a grimace), hold for a count of ten, and release. Repeat five times”. It was thought that smiling until it was almost a grimace activated the "muscles" that resided right above the breast, and if one were to exercise it, the breasts would lift.
8. Vigorously Massaging Your Face Will Make Wrinkles Go Away:
It won’t. In fact stretching and pulling at the skin on your face regularly may actually increase the likelihood of wrinkles. Check out our top 10 anti-aging products for stuff
that actually works.
9. Rub On Oil and Bandage Your Arms At Night To Make Them Thinner:
While your arms will probably look really smooth in the morning, there is that tiny little problem of circulation.
10. Lard As A Makeup Primer:
Ok….we don’t really have an explanation as to why this was
ever considered a good idea.
